Choosing a tallow balm?
The majority of people are paying for “tallow” balms that aren’t really even true tallow. 😱They are “natural-ish” products that are overpriced!
🧴In summary… Choose a tallow balm that is made from ALL suet fat of pasture-raised, grass-fed & grass-finished beef, made with other organic oils, and either unscented or scented with organic essential oils or infused with organic herbs. For more specifics, keep reading 🔍
✅ SUET fat - if the label doesn’t indicate that the tallow is from suet fat, it probably isn’t. True tallow is rendered from suet fat, the fat around the kidneys and loins. This is the vitamin rich fat on a cow with the benefits tallow is known for! Suet fat is much more expensive than just any beef fat, hence why most brands don’t use it. Also, avoid brands that use "primarily suet" (what does that mean? 90%, 75%, 50%?!) If your tallow balm doesn’t use ALL suet, it’s not really tallow! 🥴
✅ The tallow is rendered by the company that makes the tallow balm - there is no way to know if tallow that your purchase to make into balm is made from suet fat especially when buying from large online suppliers or Amazon. Additionally, many companies that sell rendered tallow add fillers and preservatives- exactly what you're trying to avoid by using tallow balm 😵💫 this tallow is much cheaper than true unadulterated tallow which is why you'll notice there is quite a wide price range of tallow balms on the market - anywhere for $15 for a 4oz tallow balm to $50+ for 2oz tallow balm!
✅ Grass-fed AND grass-finished - did you know that beef labeled only as grass-fed was fed grains or corn??? Grass-finished means that the cows ate grass, plants, and shrubs their entire lives. Grass-fed just means that cows began by eating grass but were fed grain or corn feed at some point, usually to fatten them as they get closer to processing… make sure the cows were grass-fed and grass-finished! If not, your tallow is likely also coming with toxins and less vitamins & minerals. 🐄
✅ Pasture-raised - just because a product is labeled grass-fed does not mean it was also pasture-raised. Many grass-fed products come from cows who sit in feedlots their entire lives! A happier animal produces a higher quality product. 🌱🐮
✅ Organic oils - choose a balm that is made with other oils that are certified organic. Many brands use conventional olive oil or jojoba oil often purchased from Amazon, many of which come from China. What’s the point in getting tallow’s benefits if you’re also lathering on gmos, pesticides, etc along with it? 🦠
✅ No “fragrance”, “fragrance oil”, or “parfums” (i.e. lavender oil, lavender fragrance). These are synthetic scents, an unidentified mixture of ingredients including carcinogens, allergens, respiratory irritants, endocrine disruptors, neurotoxic chemicals and environmental toxicants.
