FAQs

Where is your tallow sourced from?
We do not source the tallow, but we source the beef suet needed to make tallow. We then render the beef suet into tallow ourselves which is a 2-3 day process.

We do not trust purchasing tallow from unknown sources, for example Amazon. Unfortunately, the tallow market isn't always what it seems or claims to be. A lot of "tallow" products do not use real tallow made from beef suet, but just any beef fat which is not true tallow. They also can have preservatives and fillers added to them unknowingly.

We purchase beef suet from local family owned regenerative farms in Pennsylvania that pasture raise cattle in small herds and are grass-fed & grass-finished.

What is beef suet?
Beef suet is the hard fat around the kidneys and loins. This is the vitamin rich fat on a cow with the benefits tallow is known for!

Since there is much less suet fat than regular fat on a cow, it is much more expensive, hence why most brands don't use it and why you'll see some "tallow" balms priced lower.

What is the shelf-life of the whipped tallow balm?
Our tallow balm is free from any artificial preservatives - it is shelf-stable through its own natural properties. To ensure your tallow balm's shelf-life, always apply using clean, dry hands to prevent moisture and bacteria introduction. Secure the lid between uses and store at room temperature (60-75 degrees).

Keep away from heat and light.

Although there isn't an expiration date per se, if you follow the care recommendations your tallow balm should stay fresh for 6-8 months.

How should tallow balm be stored?

Store tallow balm in a cool (60-75°F is ideal), dark place away from sunlight and heat sources. The warmer the temperature, the softer the balm will become; high temperatures will melt the tallow balm. It will resolidify when placed back in ideal temperatures. The texture may change slightly. In very cool temperatures, the balm will solidify. It will soften when placed back in ideal temperatures.

How long does it take to rehydrate the sourdough starter?
It only takes 2 days to rehydrate! You'll be baking on day 3!

Why purchase dehydrated sourdough starter, can't I just make my own?
Yes, you can but it takes weeks to become active and ready to bake with when starting from scratch... that is IF everything goes well! It took me months to figure it out, if I had known I could just purchase one, I would have! I went through a ton of flour too, so it didn't save me money either!

Save yourself time, money, and frustration and start with an already established dehydrated starter! The only reason to start your own is bragging rights!
